MAZZY STAR![]() So Tonight That I Might See (1993) Rating (Out of 10): 7.5 Tracklisting: Fade Into You/Bells Ring/Mary Of Silence/Five String Serenade/Blue Light/She's My Baby/Unreflected/Wasted/Into Dust/So Tonight That I Might See Mazzy Star were formed in California in the late 80's by Vocalist Hope Sandoval and Guitarist Dave Roback. With both of them hailing from a background of Psychadelia it's not surprising that the music of Mazzy Star is dreamy and hypnotic, but not in the traditional psychedelic sense. Their music is not so much a drug-induced delirium but more of an uneasy euphoria. The real essence and brilliance of Mazzy Star lies in Hope Sandoval's voice. There is something uniquely beautiful about it, something understated, hypnotic, and laconic, producing a dream-like state for the listener. And the accompanying music is just as beautiful, low-fi and dream-like. 'So Tonight That I Might See' is Mazzy Star's 2nd album having already released 'She Hangs Brightly' in 1990. The album is as beautiful and poetic as the title suggests. Each song is a separate piece in it's own right, yet the whole thing hangs together like one huge colourful canvas. The album's opening track is most definitely Mazzy Star's finest hour. 'Fade into you' is a song they somehow never managed to equal. A wispy, atmospheric ballad, with poetically obsessive lyrics and a haunting quality to it, it is the sort of song you just sink into and never get tired listening to. 'Five String Serenade', written by Arthur Smith from 'Love' is another beautiful song on the album. It's hard to imagine it ever having been anything other than a Mazzy Star song, it fits their style so perfectly. The other songs fit around these two neatly, complementing them perfectly. Mazzy Star may not be the most famous band in the world, and the very stark, introspective feel to the majority of their songs may not make them the easiest band to listen to, but they are undoubtedly unique.
